Google Will Charge You For Missed LSA Calls Starting Oct 1

Google Is About To Charge You For Missed Calls On Local Services Ads

Starting October 1, 2026, Google is changing how it bills call leads on Local Services Ads. A missed call during your business hours will be charged as a valid lead if the caller stays on the line more than 20 seconds. You do not have to answer. You do not have to talk to anyone.

If the phone rings for 20 seconds and nobody picks up, that is a paid lead. Here is what changed, and four things you can do about it before October.

What Google Said

Google notified Local Services advertisers that on October 01, 2026, it is updating how and when advertisers are charged for call leads originating from Local Services Ads.

Two changes:

Missed calls. Missed calls during business hours will now be charged as valid leads if a user stays on the line for more than 20 seconds, with some exceptions.

Subsequent calls. If an initial call does not qualify as a charged lead, any follow up calls between your business and that user that meet the valid lead criteria will be charged.

Google's stated reason is that customers come to Local Services Ads with immediate needs and expect to reach a local professional quickly, and that the update is meant to reward businesses that respond well.

A note on where this came from. This is Google's advertiser notification, sent to a Local Services account we manage. As of publication, Google's public How leads work help page has not been updated to reflect it. That page still describes a missed call without a voicemail as a valid lead only after you return it. Check it yourself. We will update this post when the documentation changes.

What This Actually Changes

Read the current rule carefully and you can see the size of the shift.

Today, a missed call with no voicemail becomes a billable lead when you call the person back. The trigger is your action. If you never followed up, you were not charged.

After October 1, the trigger is the clock. Twenty seconds of ringing during your business hours, and it is billed. Whether you call back is no longer what decides it.

That is the whole change, and it is bigger than it sounds.

Why This Is Good News If You Answer Your Phone

Missing calls always cost you. It just cost you quietly.

The homeowner who called at 10:40 on a Tuesday and got voicemail did not leave one. He called the next guy. You never saw the lead, so you never counted the loss. It came out of revenue, not out of your ad budget, and revenue you never earned is easy not to notice.

Now it comes out of the ad budget too. It shows up on an invoice with a number next to it.

Here is what that does to the market. Two roofers bid into the same auction. One answers 9 out of 10 calls. One answers 5 out of 10. They pay the same per lead, but one is paying for jobs and the other is paying for silence. The second guy's cost per booked job climbs until the ads stop making sense, and eventually he turns them off.

That is our read on where this goes, not something Google said. But the direction is not complicated. Advertising is about to get more expensive specifically for contractors who do not answer the phone, and roughly the same for contractors who do.

Do The Math On Your Own Numbers

Take the number of Local Services leads you got last month. Take your cost per lead off your billing screen, not off a blog post, because it swings hard by trade and by market. Then pull your answer rate from your call log.

Multiply the leads you missed by your cost per lead. That is money that used to stay in your pocket by accident and will not after October 1. Then add the jobs behind those calls, because that number was always the bigger one.

If you want to run it faster, our Missed Calls Calculator does the second half of that math.

We have run ads for contractors where most of the calls those ads produced never got answered. Nobody was being lazy. They were on a roof, or under a truck, or in a homeowner's kitchen closing something. The phone rang in a work van three counties over. That is not a character problem. It is an operations problem, and it has always cost more than anybody wanted to look at.

What To Do About It Before October

Four options, cheapest to most involved. You can do all of these without hiring anybody to help you.

Fix Your Business Hours First

This one is free and takes five minutes. The charge applies to missed calls during your business hours as set in your account. If your hours say 7 to 7 but nobody is reliably reachable after 4, you are paying for a window you cannot cover.

Set your hours to when a human actually answers. You will get fewer leads and pay for fewer misses. Do this today.

Hire Somebody Part Time To Do Nothing But Answer

This is the fix most contractors skip because it sounds like a big step, and it is not. It does not need to be a full time office person.

It can be somebody who wants a few structured hours a day, working from home, paid by the day, with one job: pick up, get the name, the address, and what is going on, and put it on the calendar. A person doing that well is worth more than another thousand dollars of ad spend.

Use A Virtual Assistant

Same job, lower commitment, no payroll setup.

The thing that makes this work or fail is the handoff. If your VA takes a message and it sits in a shared inbox until Thursday, you have moved the problem, not solved it. The message has to land somewhere you will see it inside the hour.

Set Up A Missed Call Text Back

When a call goes unanswered, an automatic text goes to that number within seconds telling him you are on a job site and will call shortly. It keeps you in the conversation while he is still deciding who to call next.

Be clear on what this one does. If he held the line past 20 seconds, you are getting billed either way. The text does not stop the charge. It gives you a chance to get a job out of the lead you already paid for, which is the entire point.

This is what we install for clients through LeadSpree, and it is also something you can set up on your own with most contractor CRMs.

The Part Nobody Wants To Hear

If you are missing a lot of calls, more advertising is not your next move.

We tell contractors this when it costs us the sale. Spending more to generate calls you will not answer makes the leak bigger, not smaller. Fix the answering first, then turn the spend up.

That order is not negotiable and it never has been. October 1 just puts a price tag on it.

If you want to see what that follow up looks like when it runs on its own instead of on your memory, that is what LeadSpree does.

If You Want A Second Set Of Eyes

If you are running Local Services Ads and you are not sure what your answer rate actually is, that is the number to find before October. Your call log has it.

If you want us to look at it with you, we will tell you what we see, including if the answer is that your marketing is fine and something else is broken.
